Podcast Episode 154: No More Violence

In this episode, I am sharing my thoughts on violence in kendo. I just don’t understand why some people think it’s OK to hurt others in kendo. I just don’t get it. No more violence in kendo.

  1. I was in a competition a couple of years ago and my opponent kept hitting me in my elbow very hard. I think I received around 8-10 hits in the same location disguised as missed kotes. Considering he was 3 dan I can only assume that he was doing it intentionally, probably to weaken me and get an opening for ippon. What would you suggest people do in these situations?

    • I hate that when that happens!
You cannot do anything about it unless the referees actually see it as violent behaviour.
You can raise your hand and ask for some break during the shiai due to the pain. So the referees will be aware of the fact that your opponent is hitting your elbow.

And also from now on, you’ve got to develop counterattack skills so they won’t hurt you!

Mind you, people don’t hurt you on purpose especially when they are not capable of using the shinai however they want. They have bad habits to hit the same spot, which is not a target. They need to correct the habit so they can hit the right spots.
